In-Depth Comparison: 2018 BMW X1 vs 2018 BMW X2

Curb Appeal and Size

The 2018 BMW X2 is a sportier take on crossover driving. It sits 2.8 inches lower than its sibling and is 3.2 inches shorter in length as well. Appearing more coupelike than the 2018 BMW X1, the design is more sculpted and athletic. BMW sets it apart by giving it a slimmer windows and a sloping rear roofline. By comparison, the X1 is noticeably taller in the back and has a bigger cargo hold. Grille and headlights have been reworked for the X2, further setting it apart from the X1. While the X2 can handle an ample 21.6 cu.ft. of cargo, the X1 hold measures a more generous 27.1 cubic feet. In this category, curb appeal may give the X2 a win, although some will argue for the handsome X1. When it comes to storage capability, the numbers favor the X1.

Style and Spaciousness

BMW sets the X2 apart from the X1 in little ways. The steering wheel is more rounded. The cloth seats are of similar quality but are made with different fabrics and special stitching elements. Like the X1, the X2 has a multi-tiered horizontal dashboard. BMW maintained the same wheelbase and thus the two have similar interior space. The X1 has a slight 0.3-inch advantage in legroom. Dash tech standards include a 6.5-inch screen. BMW places it at the top of the center console and provides a controller to make it easy to use. An additional 8.8-inch touchscreen is available for those who want navigation and other advanced features. This category definitely ends in a tie. The two interiors are packed with quality and offer similar spaciousness. Shoppers will have to make the ultimate decision as to which one is better suited for their needs.

Performance and Handling

Like the X1, the BMW X2 has a TwinScroll turbocharger under the hood. It produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. BMW mates it with xDrive all-wheel drivetrain and an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. For fuel efficiency, these crossovers operate in front-wheel drive unless the rear wheels are needed for traction or stability. Handling is similar, although the shorter X2 has a slight advantage since it is shorter and, thus, has a tighter turning circle.
